GameCity is a celebration of videogame culture; a series of regular events culminating in an annual festival in Nottingham venues and public spaces.
In 2011, they launched The GameCity Prize. While there are plenty of awards ceremonies for the best games, the Prize fulfils a unique role. A panel of judges hand-picked from ‘traditional’ culture – including Charlie Higson, Nitin Sawnhey and Tom Watson MP – would choose the game which had the most cultural impact throughout the year. The aim is ‘to start conversations about videogames’.
Our task was to create a visual identity which could live alongside other cultural awards such as the Turner and Booker prizes, without abandoning the visual language of gaming. We devised a simple and versatile logotype, with a secondary device representing the conversation of the judges elevating a winner to the pinnacle of achievement. We designed and storyboarded various motion graphics to be shown at the awards ceremony, working with Yolo to deliver a kit of assets. Finally we made the Prize itself – a physical version of the pinnacle device – with laser cutting and etching by Cut Laser Cut.
